PIONEERING ESPORTS IN INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS

IBSTOCK PLACE SCHOOL

How Yoyotech transformed a forgotten storage room into a pioneering, state-of-the-art esports arena for a distinguished private co-educational institution.

THE CATALYST

STORAGE TO DIGITAL SKILLS HUB

The journey began when educators Robert Gorrie and Amy-Louise Cartwright attended BETT2022 and saw the potential of integrating esports into the curriculum. Inspired by the British Esports Federation, they formed a clear vision: to bring competitive gaming to Ibstock Place School.

However, the physical space required a complete reimagining. The designated area was an underutilised storage room filled with old wicker furniture. The school wanted to transform this shell into a flagship arena that would sit proudly within their Innovation Centre—a technological hub already housing a STEAM computer lab, VR/AR devices, a podcast recording studio, and a green screen stage. They needed a partner who could deliver uncompromised aesthetics and high-end functionality without the headache of managing multiple contractors.

THE BUILD

BROADENING PARTICIPATION & BUILDING PATHWAYS

The arena’s impact on campus life has been immediate and profound. Today, hundreds of children from Year 7 through to Year 13 compete and train in the space during lunchtimes and after school.

Beyond just playing games on the British Esports Association roster, the arena has become a powerful tool for inclusivity. As Amy-Louise Cartwright notes, the facility provides vital collegiate activity and confidence-building opportunities for students who are unable or unlikely to participate in traditional field sports.

I wanted something that didn't just function really well, but looked awesome, and I had seen Yoyotech... so I was like, well, that's where I'm going to go. Working with Yoyotech was pretty straightforward. Everything that the space needed was catered for and we didn't need to then find lots of different providers and lots of different solutions. It was just like a package deal.
